The veterinary industry is struggling to retain its workforce, as the job takes a mental toll and vets burn out. Here's how young vets are pushing towards a brighter future.

abc.net.au/news/young-vets-push-for-brighter-future-to-reduce-burnout/102061974Latesha Morante's childhood was shaped by a strong obsession with animals, and a passion for everything from the much-loved family dog to the creepy crawlies in her backyard.

Ms Morante is just one of many young women entering the industry, according to the head of veterinary science at James Cook University, Margaret Reilly. "It's changed over the years, it used to be male predominantly, but females definitely have trumped," Ms Brown said. While there are plenty of opportunities for women, it's an industry that comes with challenges for aspiring young professionals.

Oh, so females dominate the industry and now there's a retention and 'mental health' problem. There's a shock!

Everyone's walking away from hard shitty jobs, life's too short.

Great respect for vets. Dealing with illness, injury, neglect, abuse... Animals that could be treated but owners can't or won't. I imagine compassion fatigue is very present.

70% of Vets are female. I'm surprised the ABC is not calling for a gender diversity target to get more men into the industry. 😛

'Probably 70 per cent of our cohort is female and that's been fairly steady since we first started in 2010,' Professor Reilly said. Discriminatory selection practices. Meanwhile there are serious shortages of livestock vets in the bush. But who cares when we got wymyn vets?

They definitely don't get paid enough and face terrible conditions.
