Is the film industry hiring more women? These charts tell the story.

The 95th Academy Awards are in Los Angeles on Sunday, March 12, and it’s Women’s History Month. Here are some statistics on women’s employment in the movie business, both in front of and behind the cameras.

This year’s report monitored over 2,800 credits on the top grossing films. Since 1998, the study has tracked more than 78,000 behind-the-scenes credits. The percentage of females as major characters has been relatively stable since 2016, increasing or decreasing by 1 to 3 percentage points from year to year.In 2022 37% of speaking characters in the top films were female, 63% were male. The percentage of female characters in speaking roles has fluctuated up or down by just 1 to 3 percentage points from year to year. The was one explicitly nonbinary character and 0.1% of all speaking characters were transgender.
