The project to extend the lifespan of Koeberg nuclear power station has suffered further delays. But Ramokgopa says this will not mean load shedding higher than Stage 6.The project to extend the lifespan of Koeberg nuclear power station by another 20 years is running 45 days behind schedule, making it inevitable that SA will spend the entire winter without one unit, which has a capacity of 920MW.
There will be a mandatory break for employees of six weeks before beginning the same operation on Unit 2, which is now scheduled for November. The delay to the start of the extension of life of Unit 2 takes Eskom dangerously close to the July 2024 deadline, when Koeberg's licence expires. A new licence for the extension of life is being sought from the National Nuclear Regulator.
"The later return of Unit 1 means that the underperforming power stations in Mpumalanga have to significantly improve, particularly Tutuka. We know that we will not get any improvement from Kusile before November. Other units will have to improve disproportionately because in winter demand rises exponentially. But I want to give the SA public the assurance that I don't foresee us moving to higher stages of load shedding, that is beyond Stage 6.
_Business By the end of winter it will be 135 days behind..... Otherwise all is well.
_Business The question is how much over budget? How many birrions is dis ting going to costed us or rather how much birrions can we stolen. Show SA🇿🇦da numbers.
_Business The Land issue is now 29 years behind schedule
_Business Ahh.. Just a silly technicality.. Why worry..
_Business So how is cadre deployment going g people? Couple that with AA and you get complete incompetence.
_Business Koeberg needs a third unit. Its clean energy & it could offset a lot of the maintenance overuns. When most ppl are calling for a mini nuclear plant (500MW) may be best to add another unit to Koeberg at 920MW..Nuclear plants EAF stay above 85% so does Koeberg & make good business.
_Business On African time, that is still on schedule! Dont worry.
