The bill empowers the employment and labour minister to, amongst other things, identify and set employment equity targets for each economic sector.

CAPE TOWN - President Cyril Ramaphosa's signing of the Employment Amendment Bill into law this week attracted mixed reactions from politicians and the business sector.Among others, the law requires all salaries or wages to be benchmarked according to job descriptions.Busa's Kaizer Moyane said the move signalled the end to a long period of uncertainty on the proposed changes and impact of transformation laws.

However, the Democratic Alliances' Michael Cardo said they will be heading to court to challenge the bill. "It's narrow, it's ideologically driven in terms of the ANC's goal of pursuing demographic representativity, in fact, the Employment Equity Amendment Act is a form of racial mania." The minister is required to publish the proposed targets to give the relevant stakeholders time can comment.
