Eskom has warned that an expected cold front this weekend will add strain to the grid, especially at evening peak hours from 17:00 until 21:00.
The loss of capacity at the three Kusile units and the Koeberg unit together removed 3 080MW - equivalent to three stages of load shedding – from the grid. Eskom said breakdowns are currently at 17 093MW of generating capacity, while the generating capacity out of service for planned maintenance is 6 392MW.
Breakdowns have increased to 18 617MW of generating capacity while the generating capacity out of service for planned maintenance is 5 807MW. It will continue until 05:00 on Thursday, when Stage 5 will kick in until 16:00 on Thursday. The pattern will be repeated daily until further notice. Stage 4 load shedding will be implemented from 16:00 on Wednesday until 05:00 on Friday, Eskom said in a statement on Wednesday afternoon.
