Three firefighters were treated at the scene for heat exhaustion.

A midday fire caused heavy damage Saturday to an auxiliary building owned by South Mountain Storage in western Cumberland County. Three firefighters were treated at the scene for heat exhaustion, but there were no other injuries.Brian Coy, deputy chief of Shippensburg’s Vigilant Hose Company, said flames and smoke were visible when the first units arrived. The blaze was largely extinguished by 1:15 p.m., though crews remained on the scene till 3 p.m. to extinguish hot spots.

The building - which fire officials learned is used as a workshop and for storage for the business - is at, about three miles east of Shippensburg. It is across the street from the business’s self-storage units. Coy said while it is clear that the fire started in the building’s interior, the precise cause remains under investigation.

Coy said about 50 firefighters responded to the scene from companies in Cumberland and Franklin counties.
