An environmental crime that killed thousands of fish and could take years to correct 🐟

A Lincolnshire-based company has been ordered to pay a total of £510,190 after leaking liquid fertiliser into the River Witham which killed over 135,000 fish.

The pollution had a catastrophic effect on the river's ecosystem, wiping out all invertebrates in its tributaries for over 23km downstream of the site. OMEX Agriculture Ltd, the Lincolnshire-based global company responsible for the incident, pleaded guilty to the major category 1 pollution offence. District Judge Veits said that the incident ‘was avoidable had proper checks been made’ and the failures were ‘foreseeable’.“The pollution of the River Witham by OMEX was a devastating event and one of the largest environmental incidents we have seen in Lincolnshire.

OMEX Agriculture Ltd, a global company headquartered in Lincolnshire, specialises in the production of liquid chemical fertilisers for the agricultural industry and de-icer products distributed across the UK and worldwide.
