But reflecting on these stories, I spotted a recurring pattern that revealed its own, bigger narrative: I grew up constantly afraid. I was actually famous for it within my family, mocked as “tarsoo,” as we say in Farsi, which means fearful or scaredy cat. I was afraid of so many things: rejection from peers, being alone, my abduction, accidentally ingesting cilantro, you name it.

Wilding: How did fear typically show up for you in your career and business? Why do you say it’s made you who you are today?: In my career and business, the fears that love to visit include uncertainty and failure. After losing my job to a layoff in 2009, I naturally feared the uncertainty of my future and how I’d manage to bounce back financially and professionally. But, when the fear of uncertainty arrives, it doesn’t want us to give up hope or feel lost.

Modern science reinforces the merits of siding with fear. A 2023 study led by academics in the fields of brain science and psychology found that those who viewed emotions like fear, anger, and sadness aswere unhappier than people with a positive or even just neutral relationship to these “negative” feelings.When we fear rejection, sometimes it’s because we sense that the people around us are not inclusive, patient or empathetic.
