Nine in 10 people in Northern Ireland believe the government and businesses need to do more when it comes to tackling plastic waste.
The South Belfast MLA has says it demonstrates the ‘deep concern’ amongst the Northern Irish public about the rampant nature of global plastic pollution, as well as a desire to solve the problem. Tearfund says it is making people sick, releasing toxic fumes, flooding communities and causing up to a million deaths yearly.They are calling for leaders to address the impacts by including binding targets in future policy around the proposed UN plastrics treaty.Tearfund commissioned polling with Lucid Talk to help launch the campaign in Northern Ireland and examine people’s opinions on plastic waste.
Other areas with the least amount of knowledge were the effects on fisheries and agriculture followed by the impact on people’s health due to open burning or dumping of plastic waste.
