The former US president filed an appeal on Wednesday to halt his trial before the New York court.

The ruling marked a temporary win for former US president Donald Trump, who faces a partial dismantling of his real estate empire.

The hearings, held without a jury but with Trump in attendance, began on Monday following a surprise ruling from judge Arthur Engoron late last month that there had been repeated fraud by The Trump Organization, and ordering the cancellation of the business licence of Trump and his two grown sons Donald Trump Jr and Eric.

The appeals judge on Friday heard arguments by Trump’s lawyers and by attorneys for the plaintiff, New York’s attorney-general Letitia James, who is seeking a US$250 million judgment against Trump, accused of fraudulent business filings.
