Fronius USA in Portage is adding 300 jobs next year to its U.S. headquarters here as it starts building solar power inverters.

“The brain of the system is basically the inverter,” said Richard Baldinger, director of sales and marketing for Fronius’ solar energy business. The residential solar market has doubled since 2020 with that growth rate expected to continue for at least the next five to 10 years, he said. Fronius application engineer Matthew Clark speaks with Portage Mayor Sue Lynch during an open house at the Fronius US headquarters in Portage on Thursday, October 19, 2023.

String inverters minimize the number of connections, he said. The string inverters are usually installed under a roof, such as inside a garage, so a technician doesn’t have to go on the roof to address issues with a faulty inverter, Wszolek said. “Fronius, in general, is one of the most sustainable manufacturers of inverters,” he said. They’re currently made in Austria, where the company was founded in 1945.
