John M. O'Connor SLOCOMB — It is rare to come across family-owned companies that have lasted over a century. However, one Wiregrass business has surpassed that milestone and is celebrating its incredible longevity.
In 1903, J.P. Dalton established Dalton Drug Company after his brother C.C. started a medical practice in the area and needed someone to supply the medicine for his patients. In its infancy, the drug store sold prescription over-the-counter medicine, animal medicine, garden seeds, jewelry, textbooks, gifts, ice cream, roasted peanuts, and more. The business was also one of the first in Slocomb to have gasoline pumps and free air for customers with cars.
"We probably never thought it would get this far," Tyler said."There were some troubling times and low points along the way. In business, a lot can happen that is good, but a lot can happen that is bad. I think through the years, we've been able to survive because of the support the community has given us. We continue to live to see another day and take things one day at a time. I don't think my grandfather ever imagined I'd be in the shoes I am today.
"When he took it over from my grandfather, it was a steady business, but it has certainly grown and evolved since then," Dalton said."Probably about 10 years ago is when he expanded to the next location, and every year since, we've added a new location. We either open a pharmacy from scratch or buy an existing pharmacy. To see that expand and go into different communities is pretty incredible.
With drug stores at nearly every corner, Tyler believes the way they've treated customers is one of the key reasons why the business continues to be successful.
