United Nations body, UNESCO, has sounded the alarm for more teachers to join the profession, as 44 million additional teachers are fneeded globally to meet the 2030 Sustainable Developmental goal our on quality education.
Education sector stakeholders have gathered at the 14th Policy Dialogue Forum of the International Task Force on Teachers for Education, under way in Sandton, north of Johannesburg. UNESCO assistant Director-General for Education, Stephania Giannini, says the projections from the Global Report on Teachers show that sub-Saharan Africa needs 15 million additional teachers.
“There is a dramatic shortage of teachers globally. It’s about 44 million teachers missing from now till 2030 to achieve quality inclusive education for all. So, we have to take action and contrast attrition, which is very high in the profession. And we have to make the profession of teaching, which is so important socially and also for inclusive economic growth and social cohesion once again attractive, which is not the case.
