'Ride,' at San Diego's Old Globe through April 28, is part of a wave of small-cast musicals whose lower costs can spell high rewards for cash-strapped theater companies.

'Ride' recounts the epic journey of Annie Londonderry, the first woman to bicycle around the world. Opening Friday at S the Old Globe in San Diego, the ambitious musical features six characters, spans numerous years and traverses multiple countries — all with just two actors.
