With an estimated worth of R750 billion per annum, the vibrant and diverse terrain of the township economy has become an increasingly attractive investment destination for small businesses and retail giants like the Shoprite Group.

"Between this large and fast-growing population of people in the townships and all of these businesses, there is a source of consumer demand and disposable income. This is purchasing power. There's a large and growing population of people whose needs in terms of goods and services aren't being adequately met within their communities," she continues.

Qubeka says the Shoprite group has also been able to mitigate the lack of access to developable land with Usave Ekasi, a small, flexible store format made out of shipping containers.
