Minister of Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation Maropene Ramokgopa has visited the scene of the crash where a bakkie collided with a goods train, leaving four people dead and two others injured.Ramokgopa says they have agreed that different stakeholders need to join hands and intensify transport campaigns, to educate people about the danger of crossing railways.
The crash in the Northern Cape comes a few days after one in Mpumalanga between a scholar bus and a train which claimed the lives of six learners. “We need to ensure ourselves that Transnet, the Department of Transport, as well as the municipality, should come together to say that now how do we ensure that the signage and the campaign so that the community can be aware. Not only here in Postmansburg in Tsantsabane area, but the entire country because a similar incident happened with the trains of Transnet in Mpumalanga and there are still some young people who are still in hospital.
Meanwhile, investigations are under way to determine the cause of last week’s collision between a train and a school bus in Mpumalanga in which six scholars were left dead and two were fighting for their lives in hospital.
