Makaneta says it’s unacceptable that learners are forced to live in fear of attending school due to gang activity.
He reiterated that the state has a responsibility to take decisive action to combat gang violence, and ensure a safe learning environment for students in Eldorado Park. “The army is our last line of defense because it appears that police have dismally failed to contain the gun violence that has left learners and teachers in anxiety. Eldorado Park can not be regarded as a no-go area. The government must strengthen measures to out root criminality not only in Eldorado Park but throughout the country. We call on the government to prioritize the safety of schools as a matter of urgency,” he says.
Makaneta adds: “Schools are supposed to be safe havens for children. It can’t be right that children are stabbed on school premises.” This is not the first time residents in Eldorado Park have called for law enforcement authorities to intervene.
