Parents want Harris and Trump to prioritize affordable child care. Here’s where the presidential candidates' track records stand on an overhaul of the system.

Child and family policies have catapulted to a prime spot in the presidential race as Kamala Harris promotes a new care economy for working families and former President Trump touts his past record. “We see a future with affordable health care, affordable child care and paid leave. Not for some, but for all,' Harris told a crowd at the American Federation of Teachers convention in Houston, just days after she became the presumptive Democratic nominee.

Although these broad overhauls have not been passed, the Biden administration has enacted several new policies on child care, including capping family costs for 100,000 low-income children receiving government subsidies for child care. The American Rescue Plan signed by Biden in 2021 also provided $39 billion in new funding for the child-care industry that kept it afloat during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic but has since expired. Then-President Trump signed a historic $2.
