Hundreds of people lined the streets of Duncan on Thursday afternoon after a fire broke out at a local business, drawing a massive response from emergency crews.Witnesses tell CHEK News that they believe the fire started in a suite located above the business. Fire department has not confirmed the cause yet.
RCMP were at the scene, cordoning off the block and telling people to stay back because of the volatility and unpredictability of the fire. Police said the large response from emergency crews is partly because buildings on the street are old and close together, leading to concerns about the fire possibly spreading.
BC Hydro crews were on scene and shut down power to much of the street. Transformers could be seen just in front of the store where the fire was taking place. Duncan resident David Gray, who lives near the store, told CHEK News the fire broke through the roof of the building, and that smoke was spewing across the city’s downtown core. When he returned home, he said he had to take a shower “because there is debris and smoke everywhere.”Adam Chan is a Digital News Editor who joined CHEK News in 2023.
