As the aviation industry grows, more jobs open that technical schools are trying to fill with students in the face of a national shortage of aviation technicians and mechanics.

OZARK, Ala. - That percentage is expected to grow to about 27% over the next 3 years, according to Alabama Aviation College Director Stanley Smith. He also tells News4 that salaries for some graduates have gone up to over $70,000.

An increase in air travel and an aging, retiring workforce created a demand for more qualified employees.Good pay and job satisfaction keep them clocking into work, but they won’t be able to fill the workforce forever. “Every airport has aviation technicians working there, so every town in America has employment,” said Smith.“Out of 200 aviation schools in the county, we’re in the top 5 in student population,” said Smith.

About 570 students are enrolled in the Ozark campus, and 200 are dual-enrollment high school students who are receiving the hands-on training for free. The next class term begins in January. The Alabama Aviation College is accepting new students and are hoping to set even their newest enrollees on track to success in aviation.and receive the latest local news and weather straight to your email every morning.
