The Judicial Service Commission has resolved to recommend Judge Susannah Cowen for appointment as the Deputy Judge President of the Land Court.The Judge of the Gauteng High Court, seconded to the Land Court, currently acts as the Deputy Judge President of the Land Claims Court, and she will act as such until October 2024.
The Land Court, which replaced the Land Claims Court, is tasked with, among other things, issues concerning land rights, restitution and claims. Following deliberations, the JSC was convinced that Judge Cowen was the most suitable and qualified candidate for the post. “The JSC has considered the suitability of all the three candidates, their understanding of the court and operations of the court but at the end of the day, Justice Cowen was found to be the most suitable candidate,” says Mvuzo Notyesi, JSC commissioner.
The JSC will continue with interviews for the Judge President of the Labour Court and Labour Appeal Court as well as one vacancy in the Eastern Cape Division of the High Court in Mthatha.
