Patrick Mokhema, who operates a spaza shop in the township, was shot and killed on Wednesday, allegedly by foreign nationals.Mokhema’s demise sparked a wave of unrest in the Vaal with locals going on the rampage looting shops belonging to foreign nationals. Five people have since been arrested.Mokhema’s sister, Tebello says it is very hard to accept and deal with their loss.
“It is a hard pill to swallow when you lose a family member in a manner that we did, a peace-loving family member. All he wanted to do was to see members of the black community, especially in the township economy, growing and developing. The manner in which he has left this earth is not the one that we were hoping for,” says his sister.“At this stage we don’t have no comment about what the police are doing because no one from them has contacted us so far as a family.
Local businessman Joseph Mngoma remembers hearing gunshots ringing on the night Mokhema was murdered. But could not identify the assailants as it was too dark. “On Wednesday night around half past eight, we heard gunshots when I went out, I saw people running for their lives. I saw Papi lying down. I did not manage to see those who shot him. I did not even manage to see their faces. I just saw two people running facing this side. I know Papi as a good person but I don’t know his other dealings he had. But what I can say today is that we are living in fear here.
The situation remained calm on Friday after incidents of sporadic looting that engulfed the area and its surroundings on Thursday.
