Communal farmers in the Molemole and Blouberg areas in Limpopo say they’re losing their livestock to thieves.Chairperson of Molemole Farmers Association Jonathan Kubjane says they face severe financial losses.
“Most of the people are not working around here, they depend solely on animals especially cattle this business feeds. It takes their kids to school, so it is their bread and butter, it is a very serious economic impact to this people. Imagine losing 50 cattle, then you out of the game, that means you are gone and your children will never get food on the table. You will also die from heart attack. Even these herdsmen are getting salaries from them.
Meanwhile, the police’s Brigadier Venetia Masingi says they’re strengthening their stock theft unit in order to deal with the problem. “It is true that livestock theft is rife in the province. We have been looking at many ways to deal with it. We hosted a stock theft Indaba where we invited stakeholders such as NPA, farmers, community members and the Department of Agriculture where we discussed ways to solve this. Our part as police, we are beefing up our unit with members and vehicles to give them enough capacity.
