A fire at the Central Public Market in Bacolod City, Philippines destroyed 31 stalls and caused over P4 million in damages. The city government is working to provide financial assistance to affected vendors, including aid from the national government.

The City Government of Bacolod has requested certification from the Commission on Audit (COA) regarding the clearing of the Central Public Market, where at least 31 stalls were destroyed by fire on December 13. City Administrator Lucille Gelvolea confirmed yesterday that Mayor Alfredo Abelardo Benitez has also directed the City Engineer’s Office to prepare a budget estimate for the reconstruction of the stalls in the area.

Gelvolea stated that most of the affected vendors operated tailoring shops, while others were selling vegetables, groceries, and food items. Some vendors have temporarily halted their operations, while others have been given the option to relocate to Bonifacio Street. She added that the city government is working on providing financial assistance to the affected vendors, with additional cash support from the national government. According to the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), 18 stalls were completely destroyed in the fire, while 13 others sustained damage. City Fire Marshal Superintendent Jenny Mae Masip reported that the fire began around 2:50 a.m. and caused approximately P4.752 million in damages. She also noted that the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) – Western Visayas deployed a team to assist in the investigation since the fire involved a government property. Alma Gustilo, head of the Department of Social Services and Development (DSSD), announced that the vendors whose stalls were destroyed would receive P15,000, while those with damaged stalls would receive P10,000. Affected tenants have been instructed to submit the necessary documents to process the financial assistance. In addition to the city’s aid, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) national office has provided P10,000 for the destroyed stalls and P5,000 for the damaged ones as of Tuesday, December 17
