Fully electrifying manufacturing facilities, ports, and other industries without massive investment in new transmission and distribution infrastructure seems challenging.

But digital technologies, supported by robust communication networks, can help modernize how we operate our current grid. Furthermore, by utilizing new sustainable resources and collaborating with partners like governments and technologists, industries can begin to reduce our collective carbon footprint. Everyone has a role to play, and sustainable energy management will be a global team effort. Our electrical infrastructure is vulnerable. Power isn't always generated where it's needed, when it's needed, so as electrification increases and heatwaves become more frequent, meeting peak demand can be difficult, leading to shortages and brownouts. While renewable energy sources are crucial for addressing climate change, their production can negatively affect energy security and reliability. Our current grid is designed to distribute energy from centralized locations like power plants. However, renewable energy and storage usually originate from smaller facilities spread across multiple locations and distributed across the grid, resulting in more complex energy asset management. Additionally, renewable power generation is often intermittent. Sometimes, renewable sources overproduce, leading to congestion and potential infrastructure damage, and often, that excess energy is curtailed and wasted.
