JUST IN: US Justice Dept. approves $26.5B merger between Sprint and T-Mobile. - claireatki

ahead of the deal that “we can’t ignore that AT&T and Verizon still continue to control 80% of the Big 4 profitability and have 70% of the wireless market share. Even with the merger of Sprint and T-Mobile, Verizon and AT&T would each still have nearly three times the market cap of the combined companies.” Legere has made written commitments not to raise prices during the next three years while the company builds out 5G.

Not everyone is happy about the prospect of what could be a less competitive market, however. Gigi Sohn, a former counselor to Tom Wheeler when he was head of the Federal Communications Commission, told NBC News in a statement, “Given incontrovertible evidence of higher prices and reduced competition, Assistant Attorney General Makan Delrahim should have blocked this merger.”

“A new mobile wireless entrant that starts with zero postpaid subscribers and that must rely on its much bigger rival, the new T-Mobile, just to operate is not a competitor. It's a mobile Frankenstein,” she said. It will take Dish some time to create a real fourth presence in the wireless industry, said Georgetown University Law Center professor, Andrew Jay Schwartzman."Dish will start with none of the lucrative postpaid customers, no brand name and no retail network. Even if Dish successfully builds out its own network, that could not happen for several years, during which time the three big wireless companies will be able to lock in their customer and introduce their 5G technologies.

The Justice Department is forcing the two companies to sign what’s known as a consent decree, which means binding terms to ensure the companies live up to the agreements they have made. The merger has also been criticized by a dozen state attorneys general, which haveEarlier this week the DOJ said it would probe the big technology companies to see if they are behaving anti-competitively.

Are you surprised? All those overnight bookings at Trump hotels paid off. Or was it the other way around? Hard to keep track of who is paying off who.

F*** the DOJ! 😡

Well those trips to Trump’s DC hotel paid-off then. Quid pro quo.

Hopefully my ridiculous bill will get lowered.

So all those nights at tRump Hotel in DC paid off huh!?

Which one of y’all wanna pay these four phones off if I switch? sprint TMobile

Woohoo! More mergers, bigger enterprises, more tax cuts for the rich, less competition, less money for the people, less choices, less healthcare. Woohoo!

Higher fees a-coming. MonopoliesSuck

Is that because T-Mobile has been putting money directly in Trump's pocket?

BlowoutBuzz Uh..oh here come the cry babies from other companies..

cherylbolen Guess switching won’t do me any good now. 🤷‍♂️

claireatki I guess all those rooms they booked at the Trump DC hotel paid off for them...

claireatki The perfect way to begin a weekend - Trump DOJ finds another pathway to harm American taxpayers by reducing competition to increase prices.

claireatki Justice Department goes after AT&T merger because CNN is a political enemy, but approves this one because of corporate donations. Have never seen a more corrupt DOJ in history of US.l!!! This is third world country type of rule of law

claireatki Dear sprint please fix my service first. Omg it sucks.

claireatki So before you all go on about monopolies.. read the article. Both companies have to sell off key assets(spectrum) to Dish network to create a 4th new wireless company. These assets will probably be things like Boost and Virgin mobile. There will still be 4companies.

claireatki I didn’t realize the Justice Department dealt with corporate mergers. Scary consolidation of power if you ask me.

claireatki Capitalism at its finest

claireatki Hope my service will be less shitty sprint don’t ask me to DM you, we have been going on about the outage in my area for the last 58 days

claireatki Those stays at the OldPostOffice paid off. EmolumentsClause

claireatki Are we getting Bell labs back? I want them to maintain plan9.

claireatki AT&T bough out Spectrum and now they dominate the majority of Texas. They give multiple excuses when something goes wrong and always replace the modem which never fixes the real problem. We are on our 4th modem in almost 2 years

claireatki After all the hard work that was done to break up a telecom monopoly (AT&T), this is a ridiculous step backward.

claireatki I hope their customers benefit from this merger as much as the Trump Tower in DC benefited from all the business T-Mobile threw their way.

claireatki So will the coverage be just as shitty or shittier?

claireatki So what will sprint customers need to do?

claireatki Ew and ew.

claireatki love too see rich people giddy with joy over making money really just warms the heart

claireatki Well, I hope they can cut my bill in half. Lololol 😄

claireatki Exactly as slickenteur predicted many days ago. Guys you should follow her, she does brilliant market, political analysis. Her articles and threads are amazing. Must read them.

Justice Department in Talks With States to Win Support for T-Mobile, Sprint MergerThe Justice Department is pushing state officials to support a planned settlement that would allow T-Mobile US and Sprint to merge by selling assets to Dish Network. This to me seems like something the DOJ isn’t supposed to be used for 🤷🏾‍♂️ CGasparino budswdrbobbillw The DOJ should not be negotiating on behalf of Corporations, this is wrong. They should not merge. No more monopolies.
