Opposing methane regulation would weaken the argument that natural gas fits into a low-carbon future

AMERICA’S LARGEST source of methane emissions is oil and gas production. In the 20 years after it is released, the powerful greenhouse gas traps over 80 times more heat in the atmosphere than carbon dioxide does. Now the Trump administration is seeking to roll back regulations imposed in 2016 that seek to limit it.

But for oil and gas majors, the question is partly one of image. These firms seek to present themselves as leaders in an energy transition away from coal. “Shell remains committed to achieving our target of maintaining methane-emissions intensity below 0.2% by 2025 for all operated assets globally,” says Gretch Watkins, Shell’s US president. In 2017 Shell began implementing a voluntary leak-detection and repair programme.
