Government announces €1 billion in funding for national rail network

Image: Eamonn Farrell/Rollingnews.ie Image: Eamonn Farrell/Rollingnews.ie MINISTER FOR TRANSPORT, Tourism and Sport Shane Ross has announced a €1 billion investment in Ireland’s heavy rail infrastructure over the next five years.

The funding will be separate to funding provided for other rail-related projects, such as the National Train Control Centre, the expansion of the Greater Dublin Area Commuter Rail Fleet and planned investment under the DART Expansion Programme. “This level of investment means that the rail network is now being funded at the ‘steady state’ level required to ensure optimal maintenance, renewal and improvement of our rail infrastructure,” he said.

Agree with darrenwbrowne its not a national service when it doesn't service the whole country ie Donegal

Just to be clear, “investment” would suggest something new, there is nothing new in this, this lump sum is just making up for a lack of PSO funding in the rail network over the last decade. This is mostly for renewal/maintenance/updating, nothing new per-se. fakenews

The dublin to wexford line needs immediate attention! Single line / huge risk of erosion / developing commuter need

Can it really be called a national rail network if doesn't service the whole nation? Donegal
