The Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development did not consult with other relevant organs of state and stakeholder groups, the court found.A high court has overturned a decision classifying wildlife species in the same category as livestock, and which would have compromised conservation efforts.

"This would have allowed breeders to manipulate our indigenous wildlife or game in a similar way that we manipulate livestock for animal production," said Lizanne Nel, conservation manager at the South African Hunters and Game Conservation Association. The judgment noted that the aim of the Animal Improvement Act is to improve the production of farm animals and secure protein resources.

The department has not yet responded to News24's questions about why it had made the decision to list the species as landrace breeds.
