Two companies are charged by Worksafe over the death of construction worker Jonathan Hartshorn, who fell 20 metres when a glass roof gave way at Curtin University three years ago.

Two companies are facing millions of dollars in fines after being charged over the death of a worker who fell from the roof of a building under construction at Perth's Curtin University. Two other workers were injured and taken to hospitalJonathan Hartshorn, an apprentice carpenter, died after falling about 20 metres while working on the glass roof in October 2020.

The incident predated the introduction of the Work Health and Safety Act 2020, so the charges were laid under the Occupational Safety and Health Act 1984. Acting WorkSafe Commissioner Sally North said the investigation was extremely complex and time-consuming, and it was now up to the courts to decide what action would be appropriate.Electrical Trades Union official Damian Clancey was on site when the accident happened and described hearing a "massive crashing sound" as he walked by the building."It sounded like smashing glass, someone filling a skip bin and you were standing three feet away from it.

"If it had happened five minutes earlier, there would have been probably 15 to 20 people working in that area, so we're very lucky.
