A Malaysian company operating a mamak restaurant and its employee have been charged in court with storing a large quantity of controlled cooking oil at an unlicensed premises.

A company operating a mamak restaurant and its employee were charged at the Sessions Court here today with the offence of storing controlled cooking oil amounting to 1,241 kilograms in drums at an unlicensed premises last April. The company was represented by its Operations Manager, Mohd. Arman Omar, 45, at today's proceedings. However, the Judge, Mohamad Kamil Nizam, asked for the company director to appear on the next mention date on February 13th.

Das Jhonny Chandra, 33, a Bangladeshi worker at the restaurant, as the accused person (OKS), pleaded not guilty after the charge was read to him before Mohamad Kamil. According to the charge, the company and OKS were found to have stored controlled goods, namely cooking oil, amounting to 1,241 kilograms in drums at a premises that was not licensed by the Supply Officer for storage. The offence was committed at a workers' hostel at Dataran Sentral Seremban around 3.15 pm on April 26, 2024. The prosecution was made under Section 20(1) of the Control of Supplies Act (CSA) 1961 which can be punished under Section 22(2) of the same act and can be fined not exceeding RM 2 million and for the second or subsequent offence, a maximum fine of RM5 million. Das Jhonny was charged under Section 20(1) CSA 1961 which can be punished under Section 22(1) of the same act which provides a maximum fine of RM1 million or imprisonment for not more than three years or both, if found guilty. Earlier, the Prosecutor from the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN), Khairul Azman Rosli did not offer bail to the OKS but if the court allows, he proposed bail of RM30,000 with a Malaysian citizen guarantor. The OKS, represented by counsel, A. Ashok, applied for reasonable bail to be granted to Das Jhonny who is currently residing in a workers' hostel
