Queensland to Investigate Health Impacts of Waste Industry Odors

Residents of Ipswich, Queensland have long complained about the impact of odors from waste facilities on their health. The Queensland government has finally announced a public inquiry to investigate these claims.

Queensland's Health Minister will today announce an inquiry into the impacts odours from the waste industry have on the health of Ipswich residents. The inquiry will be led by former chief health officer Dr John Gerrard, who has previously doubted whether an inquiry would be helpful.Residents in Ipswich in south-east Queensland say they're relieved a decades-long fight for a public health inquiry into the impacts of odours from the waste industry is now over.

Michelle Filippi lives in Ripley, near the Swanbank and New Chum industrial area, which is home to several dumps, composting facilities and mulching sites.She said she had experienced eczema rashes and other health conditions since moving to the area from Melbourne in 2021 — which often coincided with 'rotten egg' odours in the air. 'We're really happy to hear that they're going to do something and they're going to look into it properly,' she said. 'We just want better regulations. We want them to take residents more seriously and not kind of just pretend like it's not happening. ' the government to really knuckle down and put in some proper laws in regards to these waste industries.'Ms Filippi said she knew of many others within the community who had experienced health impacts some believed to be caused by the odours. ' can't say too much … but a doctor in the beginning told me I should probably move because the area is pretty bad for allergies,' she said. 'There was a little 11-year-old girl as well who was covered in rashes like I was, and she's on the same injections I am.Cleanaway operates a landfill site at New Chum, near Ipswich. It was handed a $600,000 fine for non-compliance issues last year. Since 2018, Queensland's Environment Department has received thousands of complaints about the smells.
