A €630 charge for sandwich boards on Dublin’s streets comes into effect from 1 September – but a business campaign group argues the application process is unreasonable and could bring the actual cost of the licence to around €2,000.

Dublin City Council recently announced a €630 charge for the signs that will come into effect from 1 September.

DublinTown says that the application process for the signs is completely disproportionate and could bring the actualy cost of the licence to around €2,000. The organisation said the application requires the engagement of an architect and evidence of public liability insurance cover indemnifying Dublin City Council.

DublinTown said members are conscious of the need to improve the pedestrian experience in the city centre. However, the organisation pointed out the "excessive amount of street signs, poles and the more invasive advertising stands from which Dublin City Council derives an income".DublinTown chief executive Richard Guiney said "businesses don't know how the fees have been derived or how architectural drawings, which include fire hydrants, lampposts etc., could possibly be required for permission to place a removable temporary sign outside their door.

We deserve something butter from this government. Their ideals are stale and they're baking fools of us. This will only leave a sour dough taste in the mouths of small businesses. INSERT MORE BREAD BUNS. Probably best that walkways are clear for pedestrians.

Great idea, it will get rid of all those dangerous things from streets

How much for that man in The leprechaun costume in TempleBar?

Fking Dublin, can’t take a shit without being charged for it now 😛

Hmmm the government will keep dipping and dipped until we have nothing!!!

They are a nuisance for wheelchair users, people with sight issues etc. Pay the freight or find another way of advertising your goods 👍

That’s just insane. Are you people totally stupid to put up with this?

Sandwich boards are the scourge on those with mobility or sight impairments also those with buggies/prams & they should be banned totally from being on pavements

hang it from the awning or keep it off the ground.......robbery shafting small business to have a sign on the street

Should just be banned, waste of space.
