The sportswear giant joins a growing number of companies that announced this week they are making Juneteenth, the oldest known US celebration of the end of slavery, an annual company holiday. Twitter , Square and Vox Media also plan to do the same. Nike CEO John Donahoe made the announcement in a letter to employees Thursday, along with several other actions the company plans to take in light of nationwide demonstrations calling for racial justice.
"As I have listened deeply during my first six months and over the past few weeks, what I have learned is that many have felt a disconnect between our external brand and your internal experience," Donahoe said."You have told me that we have not consistently supported, recognized and celebrated our own Black teammates in a manner they deserve. This needs to change.
Nike can afford it when charging $100.00 for a $8.00 pair of shoes.
CNN falls for it and gives more free ads to a company that takes advantage of poor folks in sweat houses.
Never heard of this. But today is flag day. Are you going to recognize this 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Isn’t that amazing how y’all cnn had to explain the name of the holiday. That’s sad for the entire country if 1 single person doesn’t know!
Still using modern slavery to make your sneakers in Vietnam Nike tho.
Pity, the workers in China won't see this tweet..🇨🇳
Am I the only person on earth who has never heard of Juneteenth until now? My public school education has clearly failed me. Good on Nike though👍
I wish I worked for a virtue signalling company like this.
Remember Nike scrapped their patriotic Betsy Ross flag shoes? Disgraceful. They don't deserve any business.
'Sustainable' and 'socially responsible'. That's the spin.
Я переживаю
Just outta the blue Almost as Fake as CNN
Great❣️ Happy Birthday Trump
Just bought me a pair of Sneakers from the Nike online store
Nike why not bring in some special shows that support equality? Maybe hire an African American artist to design a shoe?
Good for them! We need more time and a half hours.
Stupid
Are they having a Juneteenth shoe line as well? Can't wait to see the design.
The leading manufacturer of Nike shoes is China and Vietnam ❓❓❓🤔
Just think.... All of those shoes could be made proudly in USA..... .....but sadly NIKE is based in Portland and the weighed their anchors over there in China.....
Their SE Asian slave labor still has to work though.
Do the sweat shop workers get it off also?
Will yhe sweatshop children get an extra 10 cents in pay
Do they celebrate iuneteenth in Chinese sweatshops? Nike
And the Chinese Lunar New Year, too?
This year only. This is a bandwagon company as long as it's all good they're all for it but when it's not they are mum
They should give the day off to its exploited sweatshop workers, too!
This is very nice, thanks Nike
Because of Trump, Nike will profit.
Facts ? How we can win with the facts? Facts are sometimes wrong... so by following the history or by following the teachings that are in the BOOK (QURAN) ... We can win ... not in this world but hereafter as well...
Do we have to buy flowers for anyone that day?
I have way of sulation for COVID19 pandemic but media & Government is not presenting,why?0773195973
Of course it is at least they are pandering to there customer base been a lot of stimulus check money spent on air Jordan and flat screen TVs
So it’s about protecting “capitalism” and making money and least not forget Chipping in to continue the relentless coup on a narcissistic president that was democratically elected.
So, China is giving the day off to American Workers to support their Black Family. Well Done China.
Nike should sponser the BubbaWallace BlackLivesMatter NASCAR immediately
Good for thee but not for me?Doesn’t Nike use modern day slave workers? Hypocritical.
Why now?
What about naming a shoe after all races and giving them a day off?
adidas
🙄
Funny, didn’t Biden just say “Juneteenth?” No pay off there, I’m sure.
That’ll end racism...& child labor used to make their shoes.
$ $ $
NIKE knows what side of their bread is buttered.
For Americans** those factories ain't closing.. last time they tried getting off work they all got replaced.
😂😂😂😂
So all those Chinese who make their products are going to get a day off? How does this work in their 7 day a week/ 18 hour work days?
Do all the child slaves in China making their shoes get the 19th off?
Stupid.
Stupid
File under 'marketing.'
To celebrate the end of slavery i. the US brought to you by THE REPUBLICAN PARTY Thank you GOP for ending slavery in America.
Ridiculous that’s why I don’t buy anything Nike
Do their child slaves in China get paid double time ?
What about ELECTION DAY ?
How about they just pay the workers who make their shoes a decent living? How about they make them in the USA? Oh wait then the would have to pay workman’s comp, provide insurance, pay unemployment insurance. The corporate elite just want more money for themselves
Unlike Starbucks Nike believes BlackLivesMatter and that BlackMoneyMatters
Thanks cnn (chicom news network), now we know of yet another company to boycott...........
So you bash trump for holding a rally on June 19th but praise Nike for celebrating it.-Hu
Now add November 3rd
Pandering
Since 1865, it's been over 150 years of black's liberty. If blacks are still not comfortable for today's US, what the shit Juneteenth can solve? Let me tell you: nothing. All the presentations are bullshit.
Good, they should! Anyone happen to know the model of Nike shoe in the pic?
Interesting ! !
They get paid for this holiday but people of color working low wage jobs end up working that day and don’t even get the day off smh
I was at a bar in a water park today, and a couple black dudes asked the bartender to switch off CNN 😂 FakeNews 🇺🇸
Even for the little chinese kids who make the shoes?
I’m embarrassed as a HISTORY TEACHER that I didn’t know this was a celebrated day. Just like the Tulsa massacre. I can’t believe it. In the USA. WTF
Does this mean the sweatshop workers overseas get a day off?
MorningstarLucy Are they going to give the paid holiday to all the overseas kids in the sweat shops of asia? Making overpriced shoes for pennies an hour
No one supports Nike
