Founded and run by two Ukrainian women in Odessa, SEA ME produces high-quality linen bedding and sleepwear that is crafted with sustainability as a core value. The long-lasting fabric is toxin-free and all products are made to order to minimize waste, then mailed with little packaging.

The cofounders started the business six years ago when “we realized that we didn’t want to race through life any longer,” says Ishchenko, who held a high-powered job at a multinational company prior to SEA ME. Saneblidze adds, “Good food, good sleep, and good company actually give much more satisfaction than the number of dresses you have in your closet.”

Ishchenko feels that starting your own business is akin to writing a book or making a movie. “It’s basically creating your own world and inviting the others to join you in it.” As for inspiration, she says, “I’m inspired by people who dare to dream big, to live big, to give big, and to appreciate big.”

She enjoys the responsibility, energy and effort that the entrepreneurial path demands. “Within the company, I can follow my own interests and actually it makes the business more ‘human,’” says Ishchenko. For example, during Covid, she found herself communicating honestly with her customers. SEA ME was having trouble fulfilling orders because all products are made on-demand but the cofounders had to keep their team members safe.

Saneblidze always felt inspired to create her own company. Rather than fulfilling her life purpose, she feels that SEA ME contributes to her excitement around solving problems. “Once I get excited about an idea, I start to come up with a plan for how to make it work, who needs this, why something I am building is different from other things on the market,” she explains.

“You don’t have to pursue your life purpose,” Saneblidze says to young people. “Just look for your everyday life to be filled with excitement. When your work brings you joy rather than a feeling of sacrifice, that means you are in the right place right now.” Ishchenko advises young people not to be afraid of changes in the world today, but rather to see them as opportunities. “Nowadays, we are lucky. We can pursue multiple career paths.
