And the main reason is that the amount of work we do is not actually linked to the amount of time we have. As my mum always tells me: “If you want something done, give it to a busy person.”
I worked the same hours each of the four days, and yet what I once thought was a five-day to-do list got completed every single week. I was more productive within these hours, more excited by my work – knowing that it wasn't taking the place of something else in my life because I had time to do it all.
All the resentment I felt around work dropped away. My personal to-do list, all the admin you need to do to keep life running behind the scenes, became shorter and more manageable than ever – and tasks no longer languished on it for months. And all this meant that when I made plans with friends and family, I could be genuinely present and in a good time.I had time for it all – and I was happier while doing it.
Yes, at times, I had to be flexible in order to attend a meeting on my “day off” and times where I felt guilt or pressure to take something on in my week, but is this any worse than pressures felt by full-timers? No. And at least I had the time around it to reset and recover.
