Lisa Purdy, along with her daughters, Courtney Everhart and Olivia Justason, are co-owners of Back to Our Roots Candle Co. based in Deep Brook, Annapolis County. This is a mother-daughter team that hand pours candles using plant-based soy wax. Although their main focus is soy wax candles, they have also expanded into home decor and bath products. Although they have been in business for the past three years, they just opened their own shop about a year ago, in December 2021.

Purdy says the family did not originally set out to run their own business, but a few things happened to put them on this path. First, Purdy says she had always worked a full-time job and found she never had enough time for family. Life, instead, she says, was about working. At first, this was just a hobby and they gave candles to family and friends, but Purdy says it quickly turned into much more. It became a thriving, successful business.

When it comes to deciding what to make next or trying out new products, Purdy says their inspiration comes from asking themselves what they would want to buy.
