In shocker, PGA Tour and LIV Golf agree to merger

, LIV Golf and DP World Tour are merging commercial operations under common ownership, they announced Tuesday. Here’s what you need to know:The three organizations “will work cooperatively and in good faith to establish a fair and objective process” for players who wish to re-apply for membership with the PGA Tour or the DP World Tour following the completion of the 2023 season.

The controversial Saudi-backed LIV Golf circuit launched last year, drawing prominent names like Brooks Koepka, Dustin Johnson and Phil Mickelson. Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund will invest in the new combined entity, whose Board of Directors will include PIF’s Governor Yasir Al-Rumayyan as chairman and PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan as chief executive officer.The reality is the “why” of the move is still incredibly unclear. The PGA was winning battles in court. Ratings for LIV events were abysmal with very little interest.
