The South Australian government is running a campaign encouraging consumers to 'do their homework' before signing with a builder. But buyers caught up in the aftermath of multiple building companies collapsing say they did everything they could.

The government's advice to consumers includes asking family and friends for recommendations, checking references and recent work, and ensuring builders are licensed throughHowever, all three of the residential building companies that collapsed recently were licensed prior to entering liquidation.

While extremely thankful for the government's help, Mr Gilmore said the awareness campaign could come across as "condescending" to people in his situation.Edward Gilmore and his family are now back on track with their home build, three years after first signing a contract.Mr Gilmore said he also paid for a credit report about the builder.Mr Gilmore wants greater transparency from regulators to help consumers make informed decisions.

Families who signed contracts for new builds in this O'Halloran Hill development, in Adelaide's south, are still waiting for their homes to be finished three years later.
