Birmingham's Alabama Peanut Co. opens a second location, and its first outside the Magic City, this week.

The Alabama Peanut Co., an iconic Birmingham business with roots that go back to 1907, will open a Tuscaloosa location on Friday, Oct. 11.– an iconic Birmingham business with a history that goes back to 1907 – will open its second shop, and first outside Birmingham, in downtown Tuscaloosa this week.

The Tuscaloosa shop is in the middle of a hopping downtown entertainment area that also includes such popular restaurants and bars as The roasted peanuts proved more popular than the candy, though, and in 1924, Cassimus got out of the candy business and changed the name of his store to the Peanut Depot. The business changed owners over the ensuing decades but continued to operate as the Peanut Depot until 2016.

Like the Birmingham location, the Tuscaloosa shop will serve canned beers and bottled soft drinks in addition to its selection of roasted and boiled peanuts, Thursby says. He hopes it will be a gathering place, not just a grab-and-go spot.
