The Border Management Authority had closed the port of entry after protesters in Mozambique torched buildings and vehicles of border officials. The Commissioner of the Border Management Authority, Michael Masiapato, says Mozambique has assured them that it’s safe to partially reopen the port of entry as they have deployed the military to the border.
“After very extensive engagements with our Mozambican counterparts, they had actually given us assurance that they have deployed the military on their side, to be able to make sure that the situation is stabilized. On that basis, they did confirm to us that we can actually reopen the port, partially. So, what actually is happening now is that the port is reopened primarily to allow the Mozambicans that had been on the South African side that are intending to go back home.
Meanwhile, Masiapato says goods are not yet allowed to pass through the border as Mozambican officials did not guarantee the safety of incoming trucks. “In terms of the trucks that are still on this side on the corridor, we are not taking them through that side because their guarantee did not cover the issues of the trucks as it were. They had confirmed that they will be in a way escorting their people into the country and they will basically make sure there is a safe passage for them.
