In the letter to families, Sidwell board members said the K-12 school will use the loan to keep workers employed and pay for health insurance. The school expects to take a financial hit from lost tuition, fundraising and program fees.
Randa Tawil, who graduated from the school in 2005, said many small businesses could use the money more than Sidwell, where tuition runs upward of $44,000 a year."These are millionaires who are getting money to subsidize the workers who are teaching their children, in order for their children to get into elite institutions, in order for them to become millionaires," Tawil said."This is a place that reproduces an elite class of people in this country.
Hom-Diamond said the school stopped filling non-teaching positions and that more families are seeking financial support. The school learned it received the loan on April 14, about a week after it applied. Remes, who graduated from Sidwell in 1995, sits on the board of the School Justice Project, a non-profit that provides legal services to students with disabilities who are incarcerated.

goldietaylor wamu885 Ridiculous. Guarantee the school didn't refund any tuition, hasn't lost any students for next year. They may have lost some summer programming - that's it.
wamu885 They need to give it back.
wamu885 I will bet that there were no tuition rebates. This is simply theft by the well off.
wamu885 Why is this a surprise?! 45 FIRED the Head of the watchdog group monitoring the CARES Act! U know that there was going to be rampant and wanton fraud!!!🤷🏾♂️
wamu885 Why is this news? A schiool got some stimulus money. So? Is the problem that it’s a really good school? Only crappy schools should get money? This disdain for education got us where we r now, . . . and notice where we r.
wamu885 SIDWELL which has a $53.4M endowment, took a $5.2Million government coronavirus loan... the alumni couldnt spare any change as their fossil fuel & Tyson returns are hurting
wamu885 Give it back!
wamu885
wamu885 ...while my wife's small business that was forced to close got nothing.
wamu885 The rich get richer!
wamu885 Obscene
wamu885 Give back the money!
wamu885 Why couldn’t they just do a special letter/fund raiser to the alumni to raise the 5.2 million for staffing costs. Then it wouldn’t be a loan.
wamu885 SCHOOLS SHOULD GIVE BACK THE MONEY AND DO THE FURLOUGHS... ATLEAST WITH FURLOUGHS PEOPLE STILL GET PAID....
wamu885 So typical if DC. If only NPR didnt take part in most of the propaganda DC spews out.....
wamu885 Wait a minute. Clinton and Obama kids attended an elite private school, not one of the excellent public institutions? Nixon was a crook, so... no surprises here.
wamu885 Nice for the millionaire what of other schools
wamu885 Rich people aren’t even decent enough to take care of each other. Disgraceful.
wamu885 The wealthy always make sure that their wealthy brethren are well taken care of.
wamu885 Nice to see the nonbias coverage, usually you're so Lefty.

wamu885 disgrace--Get money from your wealthy alumni. I know many many small businesses hanging on by a shoestring who got NOTHING. Total Federal Government shit show. BarackObama MichelleObama you should be ashamed. You can prop them up. Give trump 4 more years. Who cares anymore?
wamu885 I find many of the schools and companies that received money to be highly improper; private schools and CEO'S that earn millions a year. Another thing is that the lists of who received funds not available to taxpayers... Corrupt choices?
wamu885 Got nothing else to say so oh ok then.
