Under the hashtag TheShowMustBePaused, music companies and artists are calling for an industry blackout in response to George Floyd's death. The proposed blackout is set for Tuesday, June 2

Numerous labels and artists are supporting “a day to disconnect from work and reconnect with our community."On Friday , less than a week after Floyd was suffocated by a Minneapolis police officer during an arrest, numerous music companies and artists began spreading a message on social media calling for “a day to disconnect from work and reconnect with our community" and “an urgent step of action to provoke accountability and change.

"As gatekeepers of the culture, it's our responsibility to not only come together to celebrate the wins, but also hold each other up during loss," reads the statement, which is being circulated under the hashtag #TheShowMustBePaused.Among those reposting the message are Warner Music Group, Sony/ATV, Apple Music's Ebro Darden, BMG, former Hot 97 music programming director Karlie Hustle, British record label Dirty Hit and independent distributor EMPIRE.

"All of my shows are cancelled. I will air replays of conversations with community activists, politicians and revolutionary music," Darden captioned his post on Instagram. Earlier this week, a video of Floyd's death surfaced showing Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin kneeling on the neck of Floyd for eight minutes. Chauvin was later charged with third-degree murder and manslaughter in the death of Floyd.

How is this supporting?

We see how you get your “facts” 🤦‍♂️ factswithfiona

. Please dont let a disgusting 'human being' take advantage of the Black Movement for her 'social climbing' benefit. If you disagree with us, then clearly Fiona chose an organization that fits her tone deaf ignorance. 🤡 factswithfiona

Hopefully people, labels and artists will use the BlackOutTuesday to engage with communities in a more authentic way that your former journalist Fiona. BLM

Ah yes finally a day off from the music industry 😎

Most patronizing idea that ultimately does more harm than good just to make white people feel less guilty.

If you’re gonna support BlackOutTuesday, DONT post an all black picture with the blm hashtag, it BURIES the hashtag in blank pictures and makes it hard to find useful pictures and videos whats happening now that we need as information and evidence

Wow. Such courage. Everything is fixed now. We can all stay home!!

Cool. At the same time can they place a hold on producing music calling woman bitches and hoes and videos of young men driving through the street indiscriminately shooting AR’s out the window?

The music industry has their head up their ass

And if the army shows up, the whole country needs to down tools!

Doing the least they possibly can lol

I don’t think silence is what George Floyd would want. I think it’s justice. Anytime we’re told to be silent, it isn’t justice we get.

And then there’s this:

Except that the music industry is controlled by the same organization that employed off duty police officers to pose as protestors and vandalize areas where protesting occurred. This isn’t a coincidence that the music industry is calling for silence when that’s what we need least

your entire industry has BEEN shutdown for months, but now YOU are going to shut it down in protest. Makes sense. These ppl are stupid.

You mean they are going to suspend today's crappy new music? What a gift. Fortunately, my Zeppelin and Floyd albums aren't going anywhere. realmusic

Total black out, please.

'The urge to destroy is also a creative urge.' Mikhail Bakunin Great art comes out of great suffering. It's important that the industry gives people a hard pause to recognize the time we live in. It's important they recognize it too. 💯

Wow - the fact that a shitty industry somehow has the arrogance to think they are gatekeepers for anything is both tone deaf and shocking. I'm also amazed at the racism by these companies. When whites, Hispanics or Asians are murdered by cops they are silent. Why is that?

‘Gatekeepers of the culture’ Check your fucking egos, music industry.

This is how it's done. Arts industry can exercise joint power, unity and solidarity by denying govt tax revenue. But too many flinch away when a few idiots shout 'Stay out of politics and stick to acting/music/painting!' Miners get worshipped for less tax revenue

Music Industry Reacts to George Floyd Death With Grassroots 'Black Out Tuesday'Capitol Music Group, Warner Music Group and their respective labels announced that they would align with 'Black Out Tuesday' TheShowMustBePaused JusticeForGeorgeFlyod The debt music corporations owe to black artists is immeasurable. Good to see some acknowledgement. Fair & equal promotion & treatment of black artists would be better still. Ain’t The Beatles & Elvis changed things but Miles, Little Richard, Hendrix, Prince, to name a very few. Good.
