Democratic Rep. Eliot Engel was caught on a hot mic saying he "wouldn't care" about speaking at a Tuesday news conference about protests against police brutality if he wasn't facing a primary challenge.

Engel is facing his first strong primary challenge in 20 years from Jamaal Bowman, a progressive former Bronx middle school principal. Rep. Eliot Engel, a New York Democrat, was caught on a hot mic telling Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz that he "wouldn't care" about speaking at a Tuesday news conference about protests against police brutality if he wasn't facing a primary challenge.

The congressman responded to criticism over his Tuesday remarks in a statement arguing that it's particularly important for constituents to know where he stands on the protests given that he's up for re-election.

Business insider needs to give the whole story. Come on! Do better! He was letting someone else decide who spoke at an event. I’m not an Engel supporter. Just a person who doesn’t want to read misleading headlines.

He sucks and his challenger aint no better.

It appears he was asking he be mentioned as an attendee. Noting his attendance is important, to him and those he represents. I am in another state, this is a gross misrepresentation of the conversation.
