The first step in the AI journey is often conquering data silos. Here's how a $1.17 billion drug maker is using a 25-person team to create a unified data platform.

are forcing companies to make sure repositories are compliant. And the data-wrangling efforts might not even be in anticipation of or a reaction to either.

To help convince departments to open up more of their information, the company created a cross-functional team of roughly 25 individuals that is figuring out how data is already being used across the company — and where areas of collaboration might enhance those efforts. And while the coronavirus forced most of the Alkermes staff to work remotely, Harvey said the pandemic has not affected the timeline for the unified data platform. Such an effort wouldn't have been feasible five years ago, according to Harvey.

Data-sharing "was certainly good enough to meet the needs of the day. But it took a little too long or people were recognizing that there were multiple people trying to go after the same data," said Harvey. Harvey is also anticipating that more individuals will be shifted from the individual business units to "centers of excellence," or cross-functional structures that are more centrally located within the organizations.
