Tánaiste Leo Varadkar has said the Government's plan to reopen schools next month involves a range of measures, including investment in changes to school buildings, more teachers, and strict cleaning regimes

Speaking on RTÉ's The Week In Politics, Mr Varadkar said the plan was "very good" and was ready to go to cabinet tomorrow.

He said after reading it he is confident it will go through Cabinet and allow us to open schools for all children, "all one million of them" by the end of next month.ASTI President Deidre McDonald has said they are hopeful their demands are met with the plan. She said Ireland has the largest numbers in classrooms across Europe and to date they have been "grossly underinvested".

SF Deputy Party Leader @PearseDoherty talks about the plan to reopen schools. He says "we need this plan to work. They have cut it right down to the wire now so there is very little wiggle room". #rtetwip pic.twitter.com/4s6ph3pS5l "We want to see the teacher-pupil ratio brought down right to 20 to 1 within this government," he said.Separately, Mr Varadkar said he thinks the issue of international travel in relation to Covid-19 here has received "too much attention".

He said the government was also looking at other measures such as the possibility of requiring people to have evidence of a negative test prior to travelling from some countries."We are part of the EU and have a land border with Northern Ireland which has a green list of 59 countries."He added that we have to remember European citizens have a right to travel and can only be restricted on solid grounds, not on arbitrary grounds.
