Harley-Davidson is discontinuing its operations in India, the world’s largest motorcycle market.
Auto experts have said that high taxes, a drop in discretionary spending, and low-cost competitors have hurt the company. It is shutting down its manufacturing in the country and significantly scaling back its sales operation, it said Thursday. The exit involves Harley-Davidson paying $75 million in restructuring costs, making nearly 70 staff redundant, and shutting down its manufacturing plant in Bawal, northern India.
