It has been almost 50 years since Australia had a national school milk program, but some remember piercing those foil caps with paper straws as if it were yesterday. Some in the dairy industry say the reintroduction of a school milk program would help children's nutritionOne dairy farmer says the reintroduction would also help support the dairy industry
Called the Milk for School Children program, it was adopted in all Australian states — with the exception of Queensland, which raised concerns about its tropical climate and huge distances between centres. The Coombs Report, released in the early 1970s, determined continuation of the free milk scheme could not be justified on nutritional grounds.Various states implemented versions of the milk in schools program until as late as the mid 1980s.
"My memories of school milk stem from my time at Mount Gambier North Primary School in the 70s," Ms Hamilton said.
So long as it is not warm! Because it would go off before you got it.
Except lime.
Hard pass.
I’m all for it. Whatever the dairy industry wants. They’ve had a beating from those greedy monopolies re - Coles and Woolworths.
Yes let's get it back great calcium for betterbones
I had Milk as young kid in primary school, as someone from struggling background it was the only nourishment we received for our dependant bodies.
The comments. Bloody hell
Remember it well. Not a bad idea.
No.
I loved school milk, always asked for an extra one. Then they added little flavour sachets - what a treat! 😁
By the time my kids went to school, they were weaned. Give the damn cow milk back to the babies it was intended for, if you haven't already killed them. 'Dairy' is a disgusting human idea. Cows aren't inanimate objects, their babies aren't disposable.
Oh, how I hated school milk! Most of the time it was off or well on the way to being off, plus I have never been able to digest full-cream milk. I feel sick thinking about it. With today's refrigeration, it might be better for those who can tolerate it.
whynot goodforyou
How fabulously foul! Who is old enough to remember the smell of vomited milk every single school day ?
Good ideas!
Hopefully it won't be warm like when we had it in tbe 70s
Exactly how do they milk those poor little almonds?
I'm guessing it'll be issued in plastic nowadays. Great another million tons a month to get rid off.
2 minutes video no one should skip: Dr. Yan: the coronavirus was made in the lab to target human by the Chinese Communist Party!
Oh no...this brings back memories...as long as the milk crates are not left out in the sun should be fine
Milo or Quick made it much better as a milkshake. I love milk but not on its own. Yes we used to collect the foil coloured tops off the glass bottles which l think were returned and recycled.
Eww.. Should be human breast milk if necessary...
🤢🤮🤮🤮🤮 cow milk is a thing of the past, lots of children don’t even drink it anymore and for good reasons: - contains pesticides - contains hormones - contains pus (yes pus... google it!) - saturates our lymphatic system - livestock is a huge source of pollution
Be a whole lot fucking better than some chaplain scheme
Are you joking? Leave the milk to the baby cows where it belongs. Are you also going to force feed children who are allergic to dairy?
All I can say is Strontium-90, 91Sr, 92Sr, in your kids bones for life. You can thank the USA, Britain, France, Russia, China for this eternal gift. milk Schoolmilk Victoria
It has just brought back the trauma of being forced to drink the hot milk in primary school- hence, I don’t drink milk at all! Don’t put the poor kids through it!! With all the allergy issues etc I can’t see it even being an option.
School milk was disgusting. And guess what. It was about subsidising industry not about kids
I think the reason it stopped was the migration intake from areas where people were less likely to be lactose tolerant after infancy (Mediterranean & Asia). Has this changed? Probably not.
Ok, but can it go in the fridge please.
Phil_B7 Good way to turn people off milk for life. I endured school milk & just looking at a glass of milk makes me feel queasy, still.... all these years later.
What a load of BS. What about providing juice, which provides just as much calcium and other vitamins, and which children also aren't getting enough of? Healthy lunches as well? We've been fed the lie of milk for bones for too long.
As long as it’s not compulsory! I did not like the taste of milk (still don’t) but was forced to drink it every day regardless! 😂😂
It’s a good thing to bring it back... The Whitlam-Labor Govt rescinded it from schools circa 1974 and a lot of kids then missed their daily protein hit which did wonders for developing children’s health!
Yuk, hate milk because of school experiences with free milk.
SpaceKidette Yuck! Bad idea the first time.
I remember primary school came about 11 , in grey crates , tin tops we flicked . Issue where put on wooden seats on the corner , sun came. Remember some teachers would let us out early .
So our Chinese invested/bought milk wants to come into our schools as well ? No thanks. Buy local owned milk only. Mine is Norco
Before we realised we had a heating planet I would have jumped at the idea? 'maybe soya milk.'
Use a chilled milk dispenser containing a 20 litre bladder of milk in the canteen area though, not the little bottles left out in the sun I remember from the early 70's. I had strawberry milk, threw up everywhere and haven't touched strawberry milk since, nearly 50 years ago.
Not Lactose ! 🥳
Is Australia just a preview of the distraught future that awaits America?
Mandatory School milk was a horrible experience. The milk was never cold, it was warm and we had to drink it. We were not allowed to pour it out.
Funnily enough, was talking about school milk yesterday. Crates of glass bottles with foil tops left outside classrooms for hours in the Australian sun for hours. The number of kids throwing up and the buckets of sawdust! Never again.
So what about the dairy free kids? The allergens and the need for oat milk, rice milk, soy milk, goat milk, lactose free to name a few! Let’s not get started on pasteurised, fat free, lite or skim.... We had one choice, one choice only.. warm, smelly, full cream milk.
Alternative milks are making big inroads into a dying dairy industry. They’re trying everything but the writing is on the wall.
Before my time, but seems a good idea.
Ewww.
Yeah they probably only bring back vanilla and horrible banana
No thanks YUK
Dairy is unnecessary & cruel
Yes please!
Sounds very communist.
Does Australia still own dairies?
With all of the allergies going around, it would be a brave principal or education Minister that would allow it. Lawyers will be rubbing their hands in anticipation of lots of work.
Of course they do $$$
What a unbelievable, shameless push from dairy industry to exploit sentiments of the past. Health of our children should never be in the hand of agriculture industry. It is abhorrent idea.
will be ok I guess if it goes in a fridge. who remembers having to drink warm milk which had been sitting in crates in the sun
No. We dont need another species milk to drink, and it has no benefits we can't find elsewhere. Want to show kids how the dairy industry keeps going, killing off unwanted calves, etc.? Then don't force them to drink the product of that system.
Bring it back, but put it in a fridge.
Yes bring it back
Much better idea than the stupid and wasteful chaplaincy program.
Good idea - set these kids upfor learning
It’s 2020, so nowadays the kids should be offered smashed avocado with an almond soy decaf latte chaser.
Eeeeeewwweeeeeewwwwwwwwwwwwww🤢
An industry wants to get their product into all schools. To help with kids’ health. Surely it’s nothing to do the the enormous and easy revenue they would stand to make! Do people still fall for these types of rackets?
I Loved school milk - except when they left it in the sun!
You think peanuts in schools is bad...
Yuk
We had that when I was at school. A fair while ago now.
Bring back glass bottles of milk in supermarkets and reduce plastic. That’s a better idea.
All I remember is 🤮
Put me off milk for life. They used to store it in the sun then force us to drink it before we could go out to play. Probably a healthy idea, but cold and not compulsory.
3wombats Good idea, but there wasn't lactose intolerance in those days.
Luke warm milk will toughen up the younger generation.
Great Idea” But will the MORRISON government support and pay for it
As long as its left in the sun for couple hours first.
'you promised me dog or higher!'
Can we do it with ‘swap and go’ glass bottles instead of plastic? Less burden on the ocean/planet (especially once we green our transport). Kids get to learn how to care for the planet and how to be careful with glass at the same time.
Money spinner too much milk has no health benefits
Screw that school milk put me off milk my whole life I still can't stand the stuff
Please no, it was disgusting. Especially the non flavoured shit... argh!!!
Oh, yummy..warm milk in glass bottles made before homogenisation (in my case) so each bottle came with a tasty dollop of warm cream in the top...🤮
No❤️
Fondest memory of school.
According to Dairy Australia...children need three serves of dairy a day 🤦♂️ One of the most self serving statements I’ve read lately.
Ugh... only if they include refrigeration.
Surely we can do better than forcing child consumption of some other mammal’s lactate.
I hated being forced to drink milk at school. Still remember how vile it was.
Loved this when I was a kid at school & the ones not drunk at morn recess were put behind the shelter shed so one could have them later or at lunch time. It was a bit dodgy on hot days tho when it solidified .... we didn't know what yoghurt was then!
Oh God no!! That stuff was vile. Being forced to drink warm milk as a kid was 🤮🤮🤮. Turned me off milk for life.
Yes ,off hot milk every morning we need more food poisoning, of course they want it $$$, let's go back to the future
I have horror memories of warm and sometimes curdled milk. I hated milk for the longest time.
Not a bad idea IMHO
RodChapple The milk should never have stopped making healthy skeletons so when ppl fall over the sskulls aren't falling apart like eggshells
That use to be my breakfast when I was a kid, I would have one small carton of milk and try and get another because I was hungry
Cowspiracy Documentary via YouTube
I can't believe the number of powder puffs we have today in society
I remember this happening every school day the whole time i was in Primary during the 1960,s, I love milk to this day, and kids were not obese back then.
Loved the school milk. My Gr6 teacher hated any being left, even if we had kids off sick, & I was always happy to drink an extra to ensure none left :)
Mmmm, just what kids need...warm milk...yum
I loved having that milk at school.
I hated recess time. We had school monitors to make sure we drank all of our horrible warm milk in summer. Luckily there was always a friend who would drink mine - bottle swap 😂😂
Don't tell ScottyFromMarketing. He'll be building the dairy.
Ohhhh! Dreadful memories of being forced by my teacher to drink bottled curdled hot milk that had sat in the sun for hours. Still makes me want to heave!
Milk is for baby cows...
As long as the gov. pays 4 times its worth.
As long as it’s distributed by Australian owned companies & use 100% Australian Milk 🥛
Kept me sick for years
Excellent idea, support the dairy industry, help provide additional nutrition for kids, with an option for those who can't have milk. Support the Australian owned farmers and dairy producers with a fair gate price guarantee.
Of course they do
Chocolate, strawberry and lime flavoured were the attractions for drinking milk at school.
I remember being forced to drink full cream milk. Regardless of my lactose intolerance. What fun days they were. Yes, by all mean, let’s bring them back.
Yuck🤮 ... stupid idea in a hot country with so many kids with allergies! Maybe they can try producing something that people actually want rather than forcing poor kids to gag over sour milk.
No! I still can’t drink milk after being forced to drink it warm, fresh from the hot school verandah back in the early 70’s
Children do not need cow's milk. The dairy industry knows this.
You could try but some people have already been brainwashed and their kids only drink almond milk. I call it child abuse!
Awesome ...milk boys rule !
LetuscomeHome Australia OpentheInternationalBorder
mummies wont allow their little darlings to drink dairy, nuts gluten egg lactose milk, which is why so many kids are allergic 2 life. Milk is great nutrition. the milk board needs to convince yummy mummy influencers, calcium from milk creates great bone density, instead of tabs
No. Still looking for the therapy group. The smell of curdled milk was vile. Fund breakfast programs instead. Stop looking to commodity something and disguise it as a service.
Good idea
I’ll bet that dying industry does.
No
I hope they put in in a refrigerator this time and not outside on the ground in the hot sun 😢
I bet they do! So many people have converted to plant based milk. Dairy milk is for calves.
Ah remember the chug a lug really well. I think I still hold the record for drinking warm milk mmmmm nice 👍
Yuck! Memories of drinking warm smelly milk on 35 degree days. Please don't do that to the kids!
Milk, left out in the sun and then forced to drink it are my memories. No thanks
Maybe we could bring back the Big M girls too , for some nostalgia 🤦🏻♀️
Reminds me of my Primary school David Livingstone in Harare
Dairy allergies in children growing significantly in Australia. This is a really bad idea!
And they will charge all the Education Departments in all states for it.
It didn’t finish in the 80s. I remember having it in 2000 in Melbourne!
Tell that to the parents 😂😂😂
😅 looks like Downer Primary
Mammals don’t drink milk after lactating years!
Of course they do 🤮 Weaned off one tit, on to another.
Not a single reference to the significant % of kids that are lactose intolerant, nor to the amount of sugar in flavoured milk 🤔
Milk left in the summer sun with caterpillars dropping from the nearby tree.....not bringing back good memories from School Milk during the 70s! Not to mention all the various allegies and food intolerances. Can't see this getting the green light.
Sorry This is the stuff of nightmares bennettswoodss
Maybe it will get more kids these days to drink plain milk instead if the flavoured kind.
'According to Dairy Australia, children need on average three serves of dairy a day' and according to Kellogs, children need sugar filled cereal every morning. I think citation/peer review is needed before the LNP start spending our money on a rort... again
Do they know? I said do they know? Do they know this is just an ad? Poor ABC walking around thinking its real... journalism.. its just an ad.
Ah yes the joy of warm school milk during the spring and summer! When I was a kid most of it went down the drain as it was undrinkable. And I went to school in the UK! (Which meant in winter the milk froze so it was equally undrinkable....)
It’s all complaints about warm milk , in the winter in the UK the milk froze hard there were endless birds with broken beaks , mind you it didn’t do them any harm as they had to learn to suckseed
And leave it out in the sun until recess?
I mean, if I was a dairy farmer I'd want it back too, but is there any evidence it's worth doing?
Oh God. Still can't drink milk after that primary school warm milk fiasco. Gag.
I remember bringing a sachet of Milo and mixing it in with milk - delicious! Flicking the foil tops was also fun to see who could flick the longest. Of course, you'd try and do these things without the teachers catching you.
Bring back Margaret Thatcher
OMG I remember this at school the only time we got to drink fresh milk X
Of course they do, right up there with the Chaplains 🙄
People can make up their minds on what they drink/eat. You do not need to be dictated by a school.
Yuk. Horrible memories.
Oh good, the school chaplains could give it out. IsIt1950
Need a hell of a lot of refrigeration otherwise no one will drink it. The hot milf we got was disgusting.
My family don't drink milk. No government is going to force my grandchildren to drink cows milk. Remember: Milk is legendary stuff...for calves.
If they bring back the old school nurse, (cough , cough) I might (re)enrol .
Milk left in the summer sun with caterpillars dropping from the nearby tree.....not bringing back good memories from School Milk during the 70s! Not to mention all the various allegies and food intolerances. Can't see this getting the green light.
Hot milk thats been sitting on the verandah never hurt anyone 😊
Milk is racist
If they can keep it cool and not spoiled, then it might be alright.
WillGeo23595929
Is it still milk ?
Wasn’t the milk given to kids because they were malnutrition
😂😂🤣🤣🤣🤪 As if modern snowflakes would drink hot free milk. Their parents would sue!
Drink it Freddie, Drink it!
CorrelaWhite But, but what about the lactose intolerant kids or the kids whose religion it is against to drink milk or the kids who only drink milk with milo? Will the milk be white, what about black milk?
Only if it’s Almond milk
Computer is the new school milk.
Don't, please. Save a generation from the trauma of hot, curdled milk and its regurgitation 🤮. The horror is etched on my memory.
But DON’T LEAVE IT IN THE SUN!
Would never consume anything made inside the body of an animal
And the local co-op. Break up the Woolies / Coles duopoly on everything.
because nothing says quality workplace for teachers like dozens of kids with the runs, extra-snotty noses and that wonderful sour milk smell rising from the hordes on a hot day.
Pick a leaf from India's Govt funded mass kitchens that deliver food everyday for govt schools. Good Day.
No. I can still recall the nausea of smelling warm milk going off in the sun at my northern NSW infants school. 🤢
Good luck with liability insurance.
ditchDairy its animalCruelty plantbased is the future
Hopefully won’t be left out in the sun, like it used to be, until kids got to drink it. I remember too well the pink milk being spewed up, I’ve never had pink milk since 🤢🤢🤮🤮
Ah, bringing up another generation of milk drinkers? Will the milk industry run an honest campaign what it takes to produce 1L of milk?
you can by milk at the tuckshop milk industry boycott sales to coles and woollies go on strike refuse to pay banks and rates
A lot of kids never drink milk these days. Some are lactose intolerant. Will they get a choice of A2, almond, soy, lactose free, goat or whatever their parent specifies?
Perhaps the dairy intake shortfall is because of poverty, and we should fix that? Just an idea.
Just like school chaplains. My goodness I feel like we are going back to my school days 50 years ago. Yep Advance Australia Fair
If they wanted to do something worthwhile as well as self servicing they could support the idea of free school breakfasts.
Have to provide a vegan alternative ad well. That would make the almond growers happy.
Company wants younger demographic using their product. Thanks abc.
Not everyone can drink dairy, allergies in a significant number of kids. One mistake could be deadly, think about that.
Can we throw in rows of single desks, the cane, a proper & useful curriculum & sugar free tuck shops as well? We may just produce healthy, balanced, grounded & respectful young adults! Not the unhinged, delinquent, chemically imbalanced & socially inept turds we see today!
People have moved away from cows milk. Dairy is feeling the pinch.
I still have nightmares of milk that has been ditting out in the sun. Bring it back if it can be refrigerated. Then watch all those lactose intolerant little darlings suffer.
Remember at age 5 throwing up all over the place from the school milk. The smell still makes me nauseous and haven't touched it since.
If the Dairy industry want to get milk back in schools, they should be transparent and show children footage of what really happens to mothers and their babies in the dairy industry. No kids would want to drink dairy after seeing that horrorshow!
I can’t believe the dairy industry wants to bring back school milk
Interesting ... phocks has his pinned tweet on the industry
This is a nightmare in the making with parents requesting, but not limited to soy, almond, oat, macadamia, rice milk. Could severely backfire on dairy pundits.
Noooooooo....
A teaspoon of chocolate Quick,or Ovaltine helped.Sort of.If you didn't get caught.
This may just be the additional funding the industry needs following tough pricing from supermarket chains. Hopefully necessary fridges are supplied too!
Hopefully its not soy.
This would never work with the amount of kids that have milk allergies and intolerances.
Bring it back,as long as government foots the bill👍
'a press release from dairy australia? better slap a headline on this badboy!'
It was the most God awful stuff, just ask those who suffered through drinking it, only positive was being the milk monitor
🤮🤮
Nothing like a government hand out to excite a big business lobbyist.
What’s in it? Complete list of Ingredients please (in layman’s terms) Chemicals to make us grow ? Just like the con of fluoride! Humans are born complete. Wake up people. Get hold of this kids juice & get it privately analyzed !
Should bring back the school milk and discard those disgusting scripture classes.
Good idea, but it needs to be kept cold. Why not establish school lunches too. Many children don't get a hot meal in the evenings.
Dairy industry wants money.
I would have loved this at school, the issue would be intolerances, allergies etc..
Will they provide fridges as well or do the kids have to drink hot curdled milk in summer like we did growing up. Turned me off milk for life.
As long as the supply, soy, almond, coconut options, than sure. Otherwise, no way.
No sugar and strawberry or banana flavouring
Introducing a new generation of kids to the smell of milk spew after some poor kid barks it up later in the morning...
Will need large fridges! The hot milk from my childhood had not been forgotten!
As long as Mrs. Roach, my grade 1 teacher from 1969, doesn't hit me under my chin so hard I bite my tongue and make it bleed everywhere. All I did was take an extra milk for my sister, who was home sick... Yup, I never, ever forgot that... or her.
Only if the milk can be refrigerated. Warm milk ugh.
People who sell things want more people to buy things
Wait. The dairy industry want to sell more of their produce and make more money? Surely not.
Good! Add vitamins as well.
There is much more dairy intolerance nowadays. And vegans.
But chilled this time I hope
May as well just drink water considering how processed the milk is
I remember back in the day when we were given milk powder to bring home. That was almost 40 years ago.
Color & call it McDonald's milk and the kids'll scoff it down
I have many warm milk school memories.
Good!
This graphic reminder is enough to make me 🤮! Going to school in the early 70’s, this was the worst part of the day.
