The federal government's plan to ban some single-use plastic products by labelling them 'toxic' to the environment is defamatory and harmful to the companies that produce them, an industry group said Wednesday.

OTTAWA -- The federal government's plan to ban some single-use plastic products by labelling them "toxic" to the environment is defamatory and harmful to the companies that produce them, an industry group said Wednesday.

To do all of that, Wilkinson said on Oct. 10 he will add "plastic manufactured items" to the "toxic substances list" under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act. "It's a criminal-law tool and it's intended to manage toxic substances," she said. "Plastic is an inert material. It's not toxic." Under the act, known as CEPA for short, a toxic substance is defined as one that can have an immediate or long-term harmful effect on environmental or human health if it gets out into the world.

🙂🤣😂🤣😂🤣

Really they’re claiming plastic is nontoxic and cigarettes don’t give you cancer

Your tweet got a whole 23 likes...Go woke, Go broke. Just ask CBCNews

It’s being banned cause people are to stupid to put it in there recycle bins after use

Assault rifles are also technically not toxic.

Is there any way to make people understand they need to reduce their use. We’ve become too dependent on it. Sheer laziness . So... it gets banned

Is there anyway to make 'plastic' biodegradable?

Those paper straws suck , makes you not even want to steal an extra 😜

To dispose of plastics in a most controlled fashion, give it some incentive. Place a calculated fee on all products of single use that comes off at the chkout. Reimburse those people that choose to collect the plastics for a more controlled mass disposal. Incentive not tax!!!

We live under an authoritarian dictatorship

Single use plastics are being banned all over the world. It's time to get on board and stop whining like mules.

As if Canadian business doesnt have enough to deal with right now. You can count on Canadian Federal Government to give you another kick when your down.

I hear the sound of a new do nothing tax coming right up!

While it is true that most plastics are not particularly toxic, single use plastics make up a significant portion of the plastic waste found in the environment. Once in the environment, they can cause harm in ways other than simple chemical toxicity.

Paper product substitutes are WORSE for the environment. Get a grip people.

Plastics industry needs to tell the government to shove something plastic where the sun doesn't shine.

We do need to cut down plastic use sure. But those paper straws are stupid. Do they not understand the concept of. Liquid makes paper disintegrate.

I'd say plastic IS quite 'toxic', 'harmful', 'detrimental' for the earth. let's move to greener, eco-friendlier options

Knee jerk environmentalism. What ever happened to “save our trees”?

I have seen studies, including CBC, that say plasic bags use less resources than paper by a factor great than 20. Has any thought gone into this decision?

They do far more good than harm.

No don't rethink

'Plastic isn't harmful', says people who make money selling plastic
