Indie rocker Courtney Barnett was riding the career wave, until the coronavirus hit. Barnett thought she was coping okay – then she experienced a severe panic attack | nathanaelcooper

Courtney Barnett has won four ARIA Awards, scored nominations for a Grammy and a Brit Award, performed at Coachella and Glastonbury and appeared on. The indie rocker was riding the career wave, until the coronavirus hit. Barnett thought she was coping okay – then she experienced a severe panic attack.

Barnett is far from alone in experiencing mental health problems during the pandemic, and her story is one shared by many musicians who have not been able to perform since March. According to the website ilostmygig.net.au, musicians reported losing $340 million worth of income in the first month of the pandemic.

Psychologist Wayne Gillespie, who specialises in entertainment psychology and has researched the personality traits of rock musicians, says musicians – due to their natures – will often find lockdown restrictions more onerous than others. Boy and Bear guitarist and singer Killian Gavin has struggled with his mental health and has turned to a therapist for support. Gavin says the fragmented nature of the music industry, as well as the challenges posed by touring, means mental health problems are common but often ignored.

The Association of Artists Managers has established a training program to help members develop mental health first aid skills. "I think what we were looking at with this programme was to give managers the skills to take on the challenges that we face."

nathanaelcooper Yep. There’s plenty doing it tough. And some who hadn’t made good money prior to this or in a good relationship. So why highlight this out of many in the music business ?

nathanaelcooper The design & prepress industry was once the 2nd biggest employer, it was 50th in the 90s & reduced even more w' the introduction of D2P. Your industry will still be there, it will look different & it will bounce back stronger and more professional. I guarantee it. ❤❤❤

nathanaelcooper Oh no. Hugs courtneymelba Glad she’s doing better. I had severe anxiety in lockdown too. Less panic attacks, more suicidal thoughts. I’m mostly better now.

nathanaelcooper Warning this is bioweapon, wasn’t just virus !

ScottMorrisonMP would open borders/skies with screening & home quarantine like Sing. Instead, we blame virus for everything TravellerAU That makes a heap of sense! Why not have pre flight departure health check? Test upon arrival, quarantine upon arrival? Allows airlines to trade, hotels, universities, opens up for tourism again... Sorry makes too mush sense!
